This course is for those who want an advantage in the TESOL industry and the opportunity to prepare themselves for teaching different types of learners in different environments.

The Cert TESOL PLUS is The Cert TESOL (accredited by the College of Teachers) PLUS it incorporates English for Young Learners, Business English and TESOL Skills for Life. The course is popular amongst those preparing to teach English abroad as part of a career break or change.

After achieving the 180 hour INTESOL Cert TESOL PLUS you will be able to teach students of all ages in any teaching environment including in the world of business and with immigrants and asylum seekers in the UK.

Course Aims

For the INTESOL Certificate in TESOL PLUS, the overall aim is to provide a thorough course which includes a balance between the theory and methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and to thoroughly prepare our trainees for teaching in any environment including ESOL Skills for Life, in a Business English setting and with Young Learners.

Eligibility

This course is open to those with a good academic background, usually graduate status; qualified teacher status, or holding at least the qualifications required for entry into higher education, i.e. 2 'A' Levels, High School Diploma. Those with a less formal academic background will be considered. The course is also open to those whose mother tongue is not English, but is of a good standard.

Course Structure

The course consists of 7 Units. The assessed units are marked and returned with comments and guidance from your personal trainer. The work submitted is continually assessed, there are no written examinations. You will receive all the training you need, we work with you until you achieve your potential. An optional teaching practice is available on this course.

Duration of the Course

The length of time it takes to complete the course depends on your other commitments. There are approximately 180 hours of work involved in the course. As a general guideline most students complete the course within 4 - 7 months, however if you require more time this is not a problem. If you are in a hurry, for example due to an overseas deadline, inform your tutor who will guide you through the course and enable you to complete it more quickly. There are no set start dates.

Award of Certificate

Certificates are graded as follows:

  • A1 - Distinction
  • A2 - Excellent
  • B1 - Very Good
  • B2 - Good
  • C  - Pass

For all fees 1st instalment is payable on registration, 2nd instalment is due one calendar month following dispatch of course, and 3rd instalment one further calendar month later.

Please note: There are no set start dates. You decide when you start. The full course is sent out on acceptance of your application.

If the Introductory Certificate in TEFL and the Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL PLUS are booked together a discount of £100 is applicable.
eg: £195 + £495 = £690 - £100 = £590.

Course Contents

The course structure is as follows:-

Unit 1: Study Skills (not assessed)
How best to organise your study time.

Pre Module Grammar
Self-assessed tasks with answers provided to help with Unit 2 The Study of English.

Unit 2: The Study of English
Module 1 - Grammar - tasks on the understanding of grammar, tense & structure - to be completed with the use of a grammar book.
Module 2 - Phonetics - tasks relating to the phonetic alphabet(given), stress & intonation.
Module 3 - Lexis - tasks relating to the presentation of vocabulary, compound words, word stems, language appropriacy & frequency.

Unit 3: The Teaching and Learning of ESOL
Module 1 - Basic Principles - answers from your own experience, the course materials & handbook on
  1) the blocks which may prevent learning
  2) motivation
  3) communicative competence.
Module 2 - Reading and Listening - tasks based on exploitation of authentic materials i.e. magazines, newspapers, radio broadcasts etc.
Module 3 - Speaking and Writing - tasks based as above but with a more productive bias - getting your students to produce language
Module 4 - Visual Aids - study of all the audio-visual aids available. Production of your own flashcards and aids to be used with a simple flannelgraph.
Module 5 - Error - looking at authentic student errors, classifying them, using a correction code, producing remedial exercises and improving your own practice.

Unit 4: Lesson Planning
Module 1 - Classroom Management - task relating to student teacher relationships and how to achieve genuine communication inside and outside the classroom.
Module 2 - Lesson Stages and Plans - putting all the above into a lesson; timing; warm-up; input; practice and production stages of your lessons.

Unit 5: ESOL Skills for Life (not assessed)
At the end of the Skills for Life module you will:
  • have been introduced to the UK national ESOL Skills for Life programme and the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum.
  • understand the differences between ESOL Skills for Life and other existing ESOL courses.
  • have identified the aims of the ESOL Skills for Life course and the needs of the target learners.
  • have had an introduction to the type of course materials and assessment procedures developed for the ESOL Skills for Life programme.
  • know where to get materials and further information for the ESOL Skills for Life courses and assessment.
The INTESOL ESOL Skills for Life module has been written by an approved course provider and assessor for City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life.

Unit 6: Business English
Subjects covered in this unit are:
  • Business English in relation to EFL/ESOL
  • How to carry out a Needs Analysis
  • Matching course content to target group
  • Creating materials for Business English
  • How to write a Business English syllabus
Unit 7: Young Learners
Subjects covered in this unit are:
  • Differences between the ways in which adults and children learn
  • Features in the stages of development of Young Learners
  • Classroom management strategies for use in the Young Learners classroom
  • Teaching techniques for use with Young Learners
