INTESOL offers ALAP accredited courses in Granada in the fascinating Central American country of Nicaragua.
2016 dates and course fees can be found below.
Known as the ‘Land of Lakes and Volcanoes’, Nicaragua has a lot to offer. Take your pick from golden sunsets, silver beaches, zip-lining over forests, surfing down a volcano or simply swinging in a hammock.
Nicaraguans, often referring to themselves as ‘Nicas’, are both friendly and welcoming. The people of Granada, where our TEFL school is located, are no exception. With its Colonial architecture, cobbled streets and horse-drawn carriages, visitors to this beautiful city are very well received.
Our school works in partnership with one of the many language schools in Granada and as such has the opportunity to give back to the community by offering free English lessons, scholarships and practical support for the school.
Centrally located, the school is within walking distance of central park, bars, restaurants and coffee shops. It’s also conveniently located close to the sandy beaches of the Pacific, the cool volcanic waters of the Laguna de Apoyo and of course the hundreds of islands on Lake Nicaragua.
The aim of the 4 Week TEFL course in Granada, Nicaragua is to thoroughly prepare you for teaching EFL in any overseas environment. You will be able to prepare lessons for all age groups and levels and feel confident when selecting materials and activities. Equipped with a variety of techniques and methodologies, you will be a positive and resourceful teacher.
The TEFL course is both intensive and demanding. There is lot to be learned about teaching and learning in just four weeks. We are highly committed to producing the best teachers possible and we will be working with you so that your teaching meets the highest of standards. This means that during the course you will be mainly concerned with lesson planning and different areas of the course. So, time for sightseeing may be limited. You will also need to sleep and eat properly to be able to cope with the stress of working long hours. Therefore we recommend you leave any plans concerning extensive tourism until after the course. Having said this it is our experience that if you follow our recommendations you will be able to enjoy both the course and the city life. Very often trainees comment that despite the hard work they found the course to be an invaluably challenging and rewarding learning experience.
This will normally consist of input sessions in the morning and early afternoon followed by teaching practice where as well as teaching yourself you will observe other trainees teach. This will allow you to learn from peers. After teaching practice a critique session is held where both trainees and trainer sit together, exchange constructive criticism and reflect on the different lessons they observed. The onus is on reflection as we believe this to be the most important component of the TEFL course. What really matters, more than a good performance in the classroom even, is for you to be able to reflect on your own and others’ teaching experience and learn from it for your future development.
A typical weekly schedule may look like this:
10.00 am – 13.00 pm: Input sessions
13.00 pm – 14.00 pm: Lunch
14.00 pm – 15.00 pm: Preparation for teaching practice
15.00 pm – 16.30 pm: Lesson planning
16.30 pm – 18.00 pm: Teaching practice
18.00 pm – 19.00 pm: Critique session
Accommodation options in Granada are varied and we have a number of options we can help organise for you. Alternatively, you are free to research and find your own hostel or room for rent in Granada – whichever you prefer!
We have ongoing established relationships with a variety of accommodations in Granada, all of which are within easy walking distance of the school (or a short cab ride). Our first choice however would be a homestay as this gives back to the community and offers a quiet environment for you to study in during your course.
We have links with several local families who can offer our students clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation in a typical Nicaraguan home environment. Our homestay options are the cheapest of our accommodation options and include breakfast and dinner every day during your stay. The home-stay accommodations also include:
A home-stay is a great way to experience life with a local Nicaraguan family. When you arrive as a new student in Granada to stay with a local family, we make sure we’re there to introduce you and help you settle in as quickly as possible. We are then on-hand during your stay in case of any problems or questions.
A home-stay typically costs $250 per month including two meals per day.
There are plenty of hostels in Granada and we work with several to provide clean, comfortable and affordable accommodation to our students. All of the hostels we work with have the following facilities:
Some of the hostels also offer breakfast, bike rental, 24-hour reception, towels and laundry service. If any of these additional services are a priority for you, we can help you decide which hostel to go for.
If you book to stay in one of the dorm rooms, we try to place students together in the same room as you will have similar timetables during the course.
Prices for hostels are very reasonable and we can usually help secure the best deals for you when booking for more than just a few nights. You can expect to pay approximately $5-15 per night in one of the hostels but if you book an extended stay (more than a week) it could work out to be less than this per night.
There are numerous Guest Houses in Granada. We work with several that are close to the school and which offer the following facilities:
Some of the Guest Houses we work with also offer TV room, games room, shared kitchen facilities and 24-hour reception. If any of these facilities are high priority for you we can help advise you which Guest House to choose.
The prices of the Guest Houses in Granada range from $40-100 per night. We can sometimes secure discounted rates for stays of longer than a few days.
Our fourth option for you during your stay in Granada is to stay with one of our INTESOL teachers. Paul has been an INTESOL Nicaragua tutor since the beginning and lives in a four bedroom house near the centre of Granada.
This option for accommodation is close to the INTESOL school and just a short walk from the markets, restaurants and nightlife of Granada. This accommodation has the option of breakfast and dinner every day during your stay. The other facilities included are:
Staying in this shared house with an INTESOL teacher costs $250 per month or $320 including breakfast and dinner each day.
Whichever accommodation option you decide is right for you, we are available to help you arrange it. We are also on-hand for the duration of your course to ensure your stay in Granada is enjoyable and that you are happy with your choice of accommodation.
